Counselling
Our
counselling service was set up in 1993. We provide short term counselling
in GP surgeries in Hackney for Kurdish and Turkish speaking communities.
We help our clients to overcome their psychological difficulties.
Our
counsellors work within parameters set by the British
Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and in
line with its code of ethics. They receive professional supervision
and have a weekly caseload of 40 clients.
The
vast majority of the clients are refugee or asylum seekers who had
experience of violence and torture. Most of them suffer from depression,
post-traumatic stress disorders, relationship problems and bereavement.
What
we offer
We
offer individual counselling using Gestalt and Integrative approaches.
The counselling service is bilingual and culturally sensitive. Our
counsellors specifically address the effect of immigration and exile
in the personhood.
This
service is specialised to offer therapy to clients in the context
of their cultural background and whose understanding and expression
of emotional distress might be different. We provide individual
short term (6-12 sessions) counselling.
Where
our counsellors work
We provide counselling in seven GP
surgeries and Health Centres in Hackney. We accept referrals
from GPs and Primary Health Care professionals in Hackney. We have
a guideline for referrals to our counselling
service. Some example of the type of referrals are:
- Problems related being a refugee or asylum seeker
- Psychosomatic illness
- Depression
- Bereavement
- Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Relationship problems
- Psychosexual problems
- Suicidal thinking
You
