"Derman helped me to hang in there….
I want to express this: If Derman had not helped me, I could not have found the strength and had the wish to overcome my difficulties. You helped me to hang in there. Aliquam a, commodo magna ridiculus. Sed nullam diam fringilla sagittis sit cras dolor.

Our feelings are like coloured beads.
If you put them together within a design, they would look pleasant. During counselling, I learnt how to keep my feelings under control, whereas before they were all over the place.”

We have been providing health and social care services to our communities since 1991.

Who We Are

Established in 1991 by members of the Turkish, Turkish Cypriot and Kurdish communities in partnership with local GPs and the health authority, Derman is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee.

Derman is an award winning service primarily based in Hackney, London.

What We Do

Derman provides a range of health and social welfare services at no cost to members of the Kurdish and Turkish speaking communities in London, including asylum seekers and refugees.
We do not discriminate based on ethnicity, religion or political alignment - all Kurdish & Turkish speakers are welcome to access our services.

Why We Do It

London is a truly multilingual, multicultural city – a vital resource for this country and its people - however, many members of Turkish and Kurdish speaking communities have found themselves falling through the gaps of statutory systems.
At Derman, we believe that nobody should be left behind, and our aim is to address these health inequalities.

This service is very important. Too many people do not speak English and we prefer face to face service instead of telephone interpreting which is often used by GPs, but the interpreter on the phone does not understand us. Derman’s Bilingual Health Advocate gives information and advice and provide support as well as interpreting for us. They understand us and helps us to tell the doctor what we want.”

I even attempted to commit suicide…My depression started in 1999 and I received some help at that time. Since 2005 I was like a living dead, I even attempted to commit suicide. After I started counselling I started to see improvements in me, I started to feel better. If I could have continued with my counselling, I think I would have been possible to stop the medication I have been taking for the last 11 years.”

Regular Activity

Our activities offered in a group environment can have many benefits. Joining a group activity can offer a support network, provide the opportunity to meet others experiencing similar concerns as well learning new skills through different activities. Together with the recovery support workers and the other group members, you’ll be encouraged to talk about your experiences with other people who have had similar experiences. This can help you with feeling less alone and isolated, and also assist with gradually gaining confidence and building your self-esteem.
